Marine Corps Air Facility Breaks Ground for New Hanger
Marine Corps News | July 21, 2005
MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va - The Marine Corps Air Facility here will soon be getting a little more room to zoom.
MCAF held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new state-of-the-art hanger facility for Marine Helicopter Squadron One July 12.
"This is a huge day for the air facility and Marine Helicopter Squadron One," said Lt. Col. Kenneth E. Crosby, Marine Corps Air Facility commanding officer. "We have been talking about developing new hangers since 1998, and today we finally get to see the plan become a reality.
"The new hanger for HMX-1 will bring the Marines working in these old outdated facilities out of the dark ages and into the 21st century," said Crosby.
The quarter-mile long hanger will be 237,000 square feet and able to house 14 helicopters on one side of the facility and six helicopters on the other.
"One of the most exciting additions to the facility will be a training room that will house a helicopter for Marines to fine-tune their maintenance abilities," said David Kiefer, assistance resident engineer in charge of construction.
The $65 million project will employ more than 100 workers on-site.
"This new hanger will have increased fire and disaster protection, a better communication center and tons of more space," said Jim Wood, facilities planner for Marine Corps Air Bases East. "This is a much needed upgrade for those Marines."
Clark Design Build, Hayes Seay Mattern and Mattern, Navy Facility Engineer Command Washington, and Marine Corps Air Bases East will build the new facility.
"Our current facility has been long overdue to be knocked down and rebuilt, and that's what we're doing today," said Crosby.
The construction is scheduled to be completed April 2007.
