hi everyone,

i'm a college senior... i'll be graduating in may with a degree in legal studies and political science. i'd like to join the corp, but am in need of advice.. i've already been accepted into a masters degree program (national security studies). so i guess my question is, should i wait till i am done with the M.A. program before i join, or does the corp have some type of delayed entry program?

i was told that the reserves would be my best option; does this sound right? ultimately, i'd like to go to law school... if i went the reserve route, would the corp let me attend law school after i complete the M.A.

I realize i'm asking a lot... and that i need to speak to a recruiter... but any advice and or insight you guys may have would be appreciated.

i'd like to join the corp as soon as possible.... but i'd also like to complete my education.... suggestions?

thanks everyone!

Chuck

Hello vaugh104.. Your questions have several answers..

:fingerwav I have been retired from the Marine Corps since 1976. I am no longer up to date on everything.. But some basics I don't think ever change.

1. If you join the reserves.. you can be called at any time. It would make no difference if you are going for a MA, PhD, or what ever.

2. I do not think you can get a deferment for grad school.

3. Another critical question is "how old are you"? There are age limits to joining the Marine Corps.

4. Since you already have a degree you should try for OCS. But from what you wrote, I assume that you did not take ROTC in college. If this is true, then to go to OCS you would have to be recommended by your congressman.

5. To be a Marine, you must prove yourself.. you can not be a Marine by being a book worm.

Hi Chuck,

I appreciate your response. In regards to your question, i'm 24... and your assumption is correct, i did not participate in ROTC, it was not offered at my school.

My father is a Marine(ret), so I'm aware of what it takes.

I may be a bookworm, but i am also an athlete; i will do what it takes to be a marine.

I've contacted a recruiter since my last post, and will keep everyone posted; and again, thank you for your reply Chuck.
