I'm assuming that's you?
That's me Eric.........and i think you will find today's Marine Corps Drill Instructors are very receptive to discussions with recruits........in fact.....most DI'S invite recruits in at night to their duty huts to discuss problems with training and such......just approach your senior DI and ask to spend time with him that night and he will be glad to oblige.......DI's are a caring bunch of guys........they just want to make sure the recruits are comfortable and enjoying their stay.............

Hell, is this forum run by an actual First Sergeant? I didn't know that. I thought that it was just the name of the forum. I guess I should read the descriptions a little more often. If 1stSgt Don Smith wants no loud gangsta rap, I guess I'll have to deal.

I'll be sure to ask my D.I. for some Ice Cream. And some music too,
I'm sure that will go over well....

The reason I told Shawn that that was a stupid question is because I know how devoted he is to Christ and America. He wants to be a Marine every bit as much as I do, and has no problem with killing and war.
Thats what i figured and is why i questioned his committment.........wheth er you want to be a grunt or admin clerk, or truck mechanic in the corps......you will first be trained to kill and if your friend has a problem with that.......he should not hide behind god.....he should be man enough to admit how he truly feels and stick by his convictions............bu t remember this: a lot of good marines have died in the past defending your friend's right to express his spirituality........

be sure once in boot camp that you express your need to pray before going out to drill to your di.......and if his training schedule allows.....i am sure he will allow you time to commune with god before you hit the grinder with the rest of your platoon..........

I told them not to come in here doing all that stupid stuff..... RR had the potential Marine recruit, Eric, sitting in the 1st Sgt's desk - going through the desk drawers looking for pogey-bait and putting heavy metal posters on the wall.....

But remember -- "I know nothing --" -- And I am out of here... SMILE

I just realized that the forum "The Woman's Side of the WeB" has music playing on it. I think we should get some theme music of our own in the 1st Sergeant's Office. Who agrees with me?

Ok so ya wanta put some nice tunes in my office !!!!!!!!

The only tune I want to hear in my office is my mouth chewing out somebody who needs it.HEHEHE:banghead:

So if ya want to hear some nice sounds in my office come on by....:k_crying: ...we can make music together but I assure you the only sound you'll make is when you say Aye Aye 1st Sgt........only kidding.....

I did have music on my thread but since I'm back East and if I'm posting about 2300 hours my time and the Marines out West are posting at 2000 hours, then it gets real loud about 0200 EDT and if i wake up my SgtMajor ( my Wife) with the playing of the Marine Corp Music or the sounds of Parris Island then the Sgt Major will pull my liberty card or worse yet pull the plug on my P/C and then where am I ?????:k_crying:

It's great to have you aboard........Semper Fi

I'm glad that the 1stSgt didn't kill me right away, and never even give me a shot at earning the title, "Marine."

These guys were ready to clear out, they thought you were going to destroy me! It's good to be here, and thanks for understanding.

Yes it is. I was hoping to get sent to OCS while on active duty, because I definitly do not have the money to go to college. I've also been dying all throughout highschool to go to the Corps, why would I want to suffer through four more years of school?

Eric,

I just got back from vacationing in Flordia for three weeks and just getting caught up on my emails. :banghead:

After reading the comments from some of our Marines about getting an education before joining the Corp or while your in the Corp........I will add my two cents.:fingerwav

I like Major Chuck spent 20 years on active duty in the Corp.

I joined 15 days after my 17th birthday. Dropped out of High School to join the Corp.....not a smart move......but the best move I could make at the time.

Went to see the Marine Corp Recruiter with a couple friends of mine who just graduated from Boot Camp. The recruiter told me to get the hell out of his office and come back when I finished High School.

So I left all pissed off. He also called my two friends in his office and chewed them out for bringing me to his office.

Anyway, my friends got stationed at Camp LeJeune and when I turned 17. I went back to the Recruiter by myself and talked to the Acting Gunny.
He told me again to go back to school finish up and come back to see him.

As I was a smart ass at the age of 17........ I told the Recruiter, If the Marine Corp wouldn't take me then I'd go see the Army Recruiter.......I hear they will take anyone. He then told me to set down and gave me a long talk about finishing school and then joining the Corp. He then agreed to meet with my parents. If I joined the service they would need to sign papers because I wasn't 18.

After meeting with my parents the Recruiter knew I would be better off joining the Corp rather than waiting about 1 1/2 years to finish high school. You see I was hanging with a gang and there was a good chance I'd be getting in some trouble before I finished high school. So , my parents signed the papers....I did promise my mother that I would finish high school while in the service...that's the only way she would sign the papers.

So off to boot Camp I go..........did have a problem with Boot Camp.

My first duty station was Marine Supply Base , Albany Ga.
Worked for a CWO4 who found out me and two other Marines didn't finish high school. He ordered us to take classes to get our GED which we did and we passed. I scored high on the test and sent my scores to the Board of Regents and received my high School Equivelent from the State of New York.

I spent the next eight years in the Corp and took MCI courses went to Marine Corp Schools, etc but didn't look at going to college. In 1968 when I came back from Nam the light bulb went on and I startd college part time while stationed in Philadelphia.

It took me the next eight years going to college part time to finish getting my degree from University of Georgia. I graduated in May of 1976, received orders to 1stSgt School at Parris Island in June , graduated in August and received orders to 2nd Marine Div in Sept. When i checked in to Div Hq my 1Stsgt Warrant was waiting for me. The Division Commanding Office and SgtMajor promoted me and sent me on to the Eight Marines Regt.

I went to four Colleges during the eight years and it was tough being married with two children you had to really give up a lot of things to make the time to get the education.

Would I do it all over agian ? Yes, but i would have started to go to college sooner, then my degree would have helped me with my Marine Corp Career.

If you can get your education first, don't let the years slip by because playing catch it hard..............That's my two cents.

BTY my education did help me out in the civilan world. After retiring from the Marine Corp, I went to worked at a College and retired as the Purchasing Director, did private counseling for a couple years, then took a position as Operations Manager for a Drug Rehab Center, got vested after five years then went to work for a Corporate Federal Credit Union as Director of Administive Services for three years got vested with the company and then retired for health reasons.

Hope that helps you a little.........Semper Fi

Attention on deck.. the 1stSgt is back.. and yes it looks like he is in a good mood. Thank goodness for that.

Eric,

It looks like the 1stSgt is trying to make it look easy. But him getting his education while on active duty was far from easy. I can tell you he would have spent many sleepless nights up studying for a test the next day... and not being able to play with his children or go to the park with his wife when she took the kids to the park or zoo.. because he had to stay home to study.

But knowing the Corps as I do I think that without the education he would have never made the rank of 1stSgt. Yes he may have made it. But it would have been much harder.

Our educations have only two things in common.. The Marine Corps paid for our educations. Number 2. We received our degrees while on active duty. But there is where the common things stop.

He had to earn his education by going to night school.. and going over a 8 year period. This would have taken up all his free time.. But you must remember he was a active duty Marine and did not have "free" time.
I on the other hand went to college for only 4 years. I did basically the same thing he did. I carried a full college load plus carried out my duties as a Marine NCO. I was selected by my commanding officer, then the Marine Corps, and the Department of the Navy for a special program. I was one of a hand full of Marines that went through this program, basically as a test. To the best of my knowledge I was the only one to complete that special program. Upon completion of my college I was discharged as a enlisted man and commissioned a 2ndLt. Like our 1stSgt.. I would have only done one thing different. I would have gone through college before joining the Corps. I missed a lot of my younger military life of care free joy because I was bending over books at the University of Hawaii and then Golden Gate University in San Francisco where I received my degree. After retirement I went on to get a teaching credential and started my own company. The Marine Corps has been very good to me. Not only did it give me the background and schooling I would need for my life after retirement... It gave me a financial start in my business. Gave me a monthly income for life and a family I will have for as long as I shell live.

So, you must think about the life after. The life after your tour or tours as a Marine.. What will you do after you become to old to serve your county.. Even if you stay in the Marine Corps and make a career of it, as a few of us here have done... You will only spend a small part of your life in the military. When you now live for beyond age 65 years of age... 20 years or so is not very long. I have been retired and away from active duty now for over 30 years.. I spent 20 years, 5 months on active duty. The 1stSgt and I spent our times on active duty close together. I only joined the Corps a short time before he did.

Eric,

I can only assume that the Marine Corps still has it's off duty education program that the 1stSgt went through. You may ask your recruiters about that. They will be more up date. If they still have it your recruiter will be more then happy to set down with you and your parents and explain how it works today.

Eric, Below my signature (the 2 photos below my posts) you will find a web link to one of my web pages. Take a minute or two to look it over. Then you will be able to tell your recruiters about who you have been talking to.

I tried to show the simple life as a Marine and not just things on war.

I don't know if they still have the same one you used, but they have a whole lot of them regardless. One that really interested me was the MARSOC program. I don't have the information in front of me, but I believe it is a program that lets you earn degrees (for free) even while you are deployed OCONUS(I think that's the term) through a combination of ship based, online, and other classes available at your current station.

He may not stop bullets, that's what the new Interceptor MTV(Modular Tactical Vest) is for, but I sure would want to be on his side once I'm at the gates, wouldn't you?

Well, your a tough Marine, and I guess you saw the raw edge of hell in Korea and Nam, didn't you? I, on the other hand, haven't even ate my guts yet, no way am I ready to ask for seconds. What I'm sayin is that I'll give my ass to the Corps and my Heart to JESUS. I don't think I'll change my mind, but you never know what I'll be like after I've killed a few dozen men. I think I'm going to try to beat your score!
