Marine Corps battling back on Confederate flag tattoos
Recruiters had 'unclear understanding of policy' regarding Southern symbol

A tattoo of a widely regarded Southern symbol of pride and states' rights – a Confederate battle flag – is not an automatic bar to enlistment in the U.S. Marine Corps, according to a Marine Corps spokesman.

However, those seeking to join the Marine Corps must acquire a special waiver from the regional commanding general if they have a Confederate-flag tattoo – or they will be prohibited from enlisting.

Staff Sgt. Andrew Hurt, public affairs representative for Marine Corps Recruiting Station Nashville, told WND, "We're not saying that a Confederate flag tattoo is racist, but it could potentially be. So we call that an 'exception-to-policy' tattoo. 'Exception-to-policy' tattoos have to be reviewed by a general."

O'Boot, As one of the commanding officers of this web site, I would like to take this opportunity to say "Thank you for your military service".

Life has not been easy and you have had a lot of medical problems over the past few years. But yet you have still carried on.

Thank you for what you have done over the years here at MarineChat.com. You have given me joy and relaxation in viewing your photos and writings over the years.

Being that I was a poor Indian from the Ozarks of Missouri that worked very hard to be the very best Marine I could be, your photos have reminded me of how it was when I was young and care free with no responsibility except for my self and my family. The Marine Corps has been my family for the past 54 years and I hope that you remain part of that family with better health in the coming years.
