Crivitz, Stephenson clean up after overnight storm, 60-mph winds

At 1 p.m. today, about 6,217 Wisconsin Public Service Corp. customers did not have electric power. A majority of them – 3,578 – were in Wausaukee. In addition, about 2,494 customers in the Wabeno area were without power. About 18,000 customers were without power at the peak of the outage.

In Crivitz, where 136 customers were without power this afternoon, the fire department is doing assessments after reports of damages to four homes and a tree branch going through the wall of the NEW Care assisted living facility, said Kathy Frank, program assistant for Marinette County Emergency Management.

The call for help was issued about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday and both areas may be eligible for disaster relief, Frank said, adding that it’s the worst she’s seen since a tornado touched down in the area on June 7, 2007.

“The summer is shaping up to another severe weather summer,” Frank said.

There were reports of damages to Lake Noquebay County Park and a mini-storage facility was demolished, Frank said.

Almost 3 inches of rain clobbered the Crivitz area in several hours Wednesday night with winds of more than 60 mph, said Jeff Last, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Ashwaubenon.

Assessments are under way to determine whether a potential tornado led to the havoc, Last said.

There were reports of several trees down in the central part of Door County from Egg Harbor to Baileys Harbor, Last said.

Oconto and Menominee counties dispatchers reported trees down on roads but no injuries.

Active air above the ground created the thunderstorms, which are expected to return by Friday night and into the weekend, Last said.

There also was low-level flooding on roads in the Crivitz area, Last said.

The Green Bay area only saw 0.39 of an inch of rain and De Pere reported no measureable rain, Last said.

WPS updates its Web site about power outages every 15 minutes. You can also report a power outage at the Web site.
