John "Rolly" Atkinson, Jr., 76, of Frederick, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the Citizens Nursing Home. His first marriage to Kathryn Miller ended in divorce. He is survived by his second wife Polly Louise Heatherly Atkinson, whom he married Feb. 14, 1963.

Born April 11, 1928 in Washington, D.C. he was a son of the late Rollins John and Mary Marccline Smith Atkinson, Sr.

Mr. Atkinson served with the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II. He was a devoted Redskins fan and a Dodger Baseball fan; a member of Circus Fans of America, Tent no. 4 of Hagerstown, and Rudy and Erma Rudynoff Tent no. 127 of Baltimore; Frederick Bicycle Club and Francis Scott Key Post no. 11 American Legion of Frederick. He was a coach and manager of the North End Team of the National Little League for 17 years.

He had been employed with Bell Atlantic Telephone Co as a repairman and installer for 40 years, and he was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a former member of the Frederick County Football Officials Assoc. He enjoyed entertaining children of all ages as Santa Claus each Christmas.

Surviving besides his wife are four children, Rollie T. Atkinson and wife Sarah of Healdsburg, Ca., Sally McMurray and husband John of Mt. Pleasant, Vicki Knill of Frederick and Brian K. Atkinson and wife Debbie of Walkersville; 11 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren; sisters Maralee Jones and husband Vernon of Tulsa, Okla., Martha Meadows and husband David and Bunny Sigler all of Frederick. Many nieces and nephews also survive. He was very found of his dog "Heidi."

He was preceded in death by his sister Mary Ann Eader and her husband Granison, his brother Robert B. Atkinson and his aunts Blanche Michael, Helen Burgess and Virginia Mock.

Mr. Atkinson is at the Robert E. Daily and Sons Funeral Homes, P.A. 1201 Market Street, Frederick, where friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15 at the funeral home with the Reverend Christopher Spruill, associated pastor of Grace United Church of Christ, officiating.

Internment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, near Frederick. The family requests that memorials be made in memory of Mr. Atkinson to the American Heart Association, P.O.
