When I returned home from Parris Island on my 10 day leave I visited my elderly Grandmother who asked me how I enjoyed my trip to Paris. I smiled and said it was just fine.

I was wondering if someone could tell me a little about what it takes to get into Force Recon, and what it's like once your in.

Is Infantry School in Camp Leguene, NC? after the 10 day leave how do you get there? is transportation provided? how about free time, do you get any? or is it just as bad as Parris Island?
From what I understand, if your East of the Mississippi, then your SOI training will be at Camp Leguene. If you live West of the Mississippi, then your SOI training will be at Camp Pendleton, right next to where you would have gone to boot camp. At SOI, you are treated like a Marine, not a recruit.

I'm no Marine, however, so my word isn't golden.

GunnyB,

you recently told me that you don't "get into" force recon,
that I will go where the Corps wants me to go, IF I make it through boot camp.

I understand that, but I was just wondering what the process was for those Marines who went into Recon. My recruiter said that any Marine could "try out" for it, and I was just wondering how, and when.

I know what your saying, and I have been focusing on both my grades and physical fitness. Remember, I'll be 17 in just a year! DEP for me.

Aside from all that, I was wondering if it offends Marines if young men like myself say "OORAH!" or "SEMPER FI!":salute:

Thanks for your wisdom,

Proudamerican2

For others that may read this:
I think that what the Gunny is saying and what everyone else is trying to tell you is that no matter what you are told by anyone.. Including your recruiters.. you will be evaluated in boot camp (through a lot of testing) as to what the Marine Corps "feels" your MOS (Job specialty) should be. After boot camp you will be sent to MOS school. From these schools you will be assigned a MOS and job. All Marines are basic infantry men. But also Marines may have a second, third, fourth, and more MOS's as you go through your career. You will continue to be evolved as you gain rank and authority (I personally had 5 different MOS's). If for example you was placed in a MOS and you wanted to be in a different MOS. You could apply through channels to be tested or tried out in another field. Most specialized MOS's require a special background or training. If you have that special background or training you may qualify to get that new assignment and MOS. As you gain rank you will be "required" to have a college background. To become a officer a college education is a requirement.

While on active duty, if you take any type of the educational classes or go to college on what we used to call the "Off Duty Education Program", the Marine Corps will pay all your schooling expenses. You also build credit for tuition for after you get out of the service if you do not make a career of it. The total amount earned changes from time to time so you would have to check with your recruiter as to the programs available at the time you enlist. It is normally your enlisted or commission date that controls the program you will be eligible for.

Well Chuck, I just hope they make a good decision. I have to say, I could do a lot of things for the Corps. I'm very good at math and science. My main strengths in those areas are statistics, logic, theology, algebra, physics and some other things that I don't think the Corps would have any use for.(It's been awhile since I've done anything besides Logic and Algebra, my physics could definitly use some brushing up. I'm actualy doing some Math homework right now. Logarithms and exponential equations....ugh.)

But I have other talents outside of those things as well. I'm in great physical shape, and I really want to have an infantry MOS, if only for a little while. How much Calculus can I do for the Corps, anyway? To quote Lowe. E.T.: "I'd rather stick swords through my face" than have a desk job.

If I do end up pushing papers, I'll be putting in requests every day for a transfer. If I don't get one...:drunk:

It's all up to the Corps though, in the end.

Math, physics and related subjects are critical to artillery and other advanced weapons systems of today. it certainly sounds as if you have something on the ball and would be an asset. However Bootcamp needs to be addressed.
You will be given a battery of tests and the Marine Corps will tell you what you want to be. calculating angles and trajectories is critical to the sniper MOS too. its just not point and shoot anymore.

Good to meet you danausmc. I haven't seen you in the E-Club or the 1stSgt's office yet.

As far as Sniping goes, I LOVE SHOOTING! OORRAAAAHHHH! Oops, GunnyBill said I shouldn't say that.

The only thing is that, while I enjoy math, I prefer not to do it while I'm shooting.

You type what you want. You want to type oorraaaahh!.. have at it... you are
not shit to me.

I only help Folks who need it or want it.... you know everything..."

The Damn Gunny

Dear Damn Good Gunny,

That sounds fine. I will still try to refrain from using the sacred words.:banghead:

So what did you do in the Corps, dana?
:shot:?, :sniper: ?, :banghead:?

Eric.. there is a very simple answer to this question...

:fingerwav He got shot at.. and shot back.. sometimes people just happened to have been killed.

One thing you have to learn to remember. Those on the other side had families too. They had dreams.. and they wanted to be at home.

Maybe you would like to visit Dana's web forum. Maybe it may help understand.. It is run by him and his brother who both served in Vietnam.

Chuck, you know what I meant. I was wondering what his MOS was.

Hey guess what? I'm almost finished with this looong paper that I've been writing on the Marines in the Mexican-American War. Two months of work and it's finaly over...

Well, the only MOS's I recognize are the 0300's. Whats 1371?

Chuck

Eric..

I thank that Dana would tell you something like James Bond would say..

He would tell you.. but then he would have to kill you to keep you from talking.

Talk to your recruiter. He will tell you what it is.. then you will understand.

Alright, it better not be a secratary or something.

Chuck

Secretary!! Marines are not secretaries...

That happens to be a field MOS... Not a office MOS.

Eric, have you figured out them ribbons yet? You are supposed to be smart about all things relating to Marines.

Chuck
04-15-2007, 13:34
Eric.. ribbons are worn in the order of importance.. starting with the upper left and going across left to right top row.. then left to right second row and so on..

A hint on Dana's ribbons.. the very first ribbon is the purple heart for action against the enemy. This was received for action in Vietnam.

Just what the name applies to. Swimming, jumping with your pack from a high platform and in the gas chamber you get gassed.

Try the Air Force then, Marines don't have need for anyone who worrries as if you stop to worry it may cause some injury or fatality to one of your Marines. How old are you by the way?
