MGySgt James A. Brewer USMC (ret), 84, Barstow, CA
James A. Brewer, 84, passed away January 12, 2013 at his home in Barstow, CA.
James was born July 25 1928 in Louisville KY, to William and Mary Frances Brewer. James graduated in 1946 from Central High School in Louisville. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after graduating, and was assigned to the all-black unit at Montford Point Camp, New River, NC. He served his country for 26 years in numerous locations around the U.S. and the world.
On June 2, 1960 James married Pearlie Newell and they enjoyed 51 years together. He retired from the USMC in 1972 at the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant. After the military he continued working at the MCLB Barstow until retiring in 1996. In June 2012 James, along with all his fellow 'Montford Pointers' brothers received the Congressional Gold Medal.
James was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Pearl.
He is survived by his sister, Ann Black of Louisville; sister-in-law, Dottie Newell; sons, Corny, Carlos and Christine, James Jr. and Karen, Jonathan and AnnaLisa; grandchildren, Varee Ramirez, Andrew and Kristen, Christian, Brittany, Kelsey and Lynsey; great-grandson, Antonio James; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services for James A Brewer will be held January 19, 2013 at noon at The MCLB Barstow Memorial Chapel. Interment will be held at a later date at the National Cemetery in Riverside, CA.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Montford Point Memorial Project can be made at P.O.B 7222, Jacksonville, NC, 28540.
