Estil August Vance Jr., 67, Fort Worth, TX
Estil August Vance Jr., 67, an attorney, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, surrounded by family members.
Funeral: 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. Michael Waschevski will officiate. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be members of his family. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of The Law Firm of Cantey and Hanger.
Memorials: The memory of Estil Vance may be honored with a donation to The WARM Place, Cancer Care Services or the Generation to Generation Fund at First Presbyterian Church.
Estil August Vance Jr. was born March 25, 1938, in Texarkana, Texas, son of the late Estil A. Vance Sr. and Murle Block Vance. He was a 1956 graduate of Paschal High School and a 1960 graduate of Yale University, with numerous honors, including Magna Cum Laude, Distinction in the Major, Phi Beta Kappa and Scholar of the House. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and the Judge Advocate Corps of the U.S. Navy.
He attended the University of Texas Law School from 1960-63, and received the honors of Grand Chancellor, Order of the Coif, Phi Delta Phi and articles editor of the Texas Law Review.
He served as chairman of Section on Military Law, State Bar of Texas 1973-75; director of the Texas Law Review Association, 1986-88; president of the Texas Law Review Association, 1993-94; member of the Civil Trial Law Exam Commission, 1987-89; president of the American Board of Trial Advocates in Fort Worth in 1996; director of the State Bar of Texas, 1992-95; listed in Best Lawyers in America, Personal Injury Litigation; fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation; and board certified in Civil Trial Law and Personal Injury Law from the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He, along with his wife, Melinda Vance, also co-chaired the last annual meeting of the State Bar of Texas that was held in Fort Worth. He was chairman of the Tarrant County Democratic Party for 10 years and served on the State Democratic Committee. He also served with Mayor Bob Bolen on the Fort Worth City Council for four years.
Although there are too many noteworthy cases that Mr. Vance tried, one particularly close to his heart concerned his successful involvement in the fight against the overhead expansion of I-30 to take in the Fort Worth Water Gardens.
Mr. Vance was also a member of The First Presbyterian Church, and the Masonic Lodge, Moslah Temple Shrine and the Patrol.
The family wants to express its profound appreciation to the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff, both at Harris Hospital in Fort Worth and Baylor Hospital in Dallas. The family further wants to express its sincere gratitude to its long-time family physician, Dr. Allan Kelly and his nurse Sandy Partridge of Fort Worth, and Drs. David McCollum and Frank Brancacio at Baylor Hospital in Dallas.
Survivors: wife of 44 years, Melinda Terry Vance; sons, Dr. Estil A. Vance, III and his wife, Dr. Elizabeth Race; daughter, Kathleen Vance Galloway and her husband, Toby; twin grandchildren, Alexandra and Rebecca; brother, Richard Baum Vance; and nephew, Richard Vance and his wife, Christie Lynn.
