Deacon Joe August

Deacon Joe August, entered into eternal life on January 18, 2005. Joe was born on February 10, 1930 in Pittsburgh, PA. He attended St. Peter Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School in 1948. Joe served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1948-1952 when he was a radio operator in the Korean War - in the Chosen Reservoir. Here he suffered extreme frostbite which later caused multiple, disabling medical problems for many years. He was awarded the Purple Heart for bravery in service. After his military service, he worked in construction in Pittsburgh, later owned a restaurant in Philadelphia then worked in retail as manager of several stores. On November 11, 1983, Joe married Fran Billat in St. Valentine Church in Bethel Park, PA. The following year they moved to Mesa, AZ. In 1985, Joe was accepted as a Deacon Candidate in the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix. He was ordained a permanent Deacon on November 4, 1989 and served at Christ the King Parish in Mesa and St. Anne Parish in Gilbert until 2000 when he was unable to continue active ministry. In 1985 Joe and Fran started a ministry for Disabled at Christ the King Church which included any mentally or physically challenged individual in the East Valley. The ministry grew from four people to over a hundred. They served in the ministry for 15 years. In 1995 Joe and Fran were professed in the Third Order Carmelites where they later assisted in starting a Carmelite Community at Christ the King Church. Joe was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Helen August and his sister Jean Fidel. Joe is survived by his wife Fran; sisters, Dee Winterhalter, Sarasota, FL; Carol Billisits (George) New Albany, OH, and Eileen Wilson (George) Villages, FL. Joe was a wonderful, loving husband and a devoted, faithful Deacon whose generous, self-sacrificing heart ministered to all he met, especially all the children.
