Col Robert Richard Norton USMC (ret), 82, Palm Springs, CA

Bob Norton, "Sweet Old Bob", a loving husband and devoted father, died of natural causes at home in Palm Springs on September 26, 2013.

Bob was born July 29, 1931, in Brawley, California, to Porter William and Hazel Lucille (Handley) Norton, the oldest of five children.

After serving in the Korean War, he made a career in the US Marine Corps, as a jet fighter pilot. He flew over 300 missions into North Vietnam and returned, in 1969, to train a new generation of Marine fighter pilots. He loved the Marine Corps and his men, and retired as commanding officer of MCAS Yuma in 1977. He began a second career as director of operations for the City of Yuma, a position in which he served until his retirement in 1996. Bob was proud of his service to our country and proud of his family.

He met Norma Barackman in college and their marriage, in 1952, produced three children, Steve, Peggy and John. They later divorced, but became good friends again, later in life. In 1996, he married his enduring love, Constance "Connie" Fox Norton and moved to Palm Springs, where she is in charge of the 24/7 program at Eisenhower Memorial Center. He enjoyed his retirement by researching his family history back to Robert the Bruce, playing golf, watching Fox news, playing hearts, and having a glass of wine with Connie in the evening. We will miss his wisdom and spirit. His magnetism filled the room. He was a great judge of character and a lifelong Republican, but tolerated family members of other, lesser political persuasions. He loved his extended family and had just returned from a trip to see many of them in Virginia.

He is survived by his beloved wife Connie, his brother Gerald Norton, and his sister Virginia Roberts. He equally loved his three children and five stepchildren: Robert Steven Norton (Liz), Peggy Norton (Scott Hansen), John Norton, daughter-in-law Tyleen Roberts, Tammi Trompeter (Jim), Terri Fox (Jacki), Thomas Fox, Traci Leslie (Bob), and Ellie Bremer. He loved his thirteen grandchildren and step-grandchildren, who will always remember "Papa Bob."

Preceded in death by his parents and his two sisters, Patricia and a infant twin.

Dad, we know you flew up to heaven in an F-4 Phantom II, as God needed a new co-pilot. Oh, that's right, you like the front seat.

A memorial service will be held at MCAS Yuma on October 19, 2013, at 1500 hours, and a second funeral service will be held in Colton, Oregon, on November 16, 2013.

His family welcomes contributions to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675, in the name of Col. Robert R. Norton.
