Jerry Claud "Bear" Medley, 67, Reno, NV

Jerry "Bear" Medley 07/07/1947 - 06/14/2015

Jerry Claud Medley passed away June 14, 2015, in Reno. Jerry was born July 7, 1947 in Auburn, California.

While growing up in Foresthill, California, Jerry enjoyed Little League baseball and jalopy racing as a teenager. After graduating from Placer High School in Auburn, he worked for California Department of Forestry as a seasonal firefighter.

In the fall of 1966 Jerry enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Shortly after graduating boot camp he was deployed to Vietnam immediately facing combat. Upon returning to the states he carried heavy physical and mental burdens. He was awarded the Purple Heart as well as many other military honors. His sacrifice is greatly honored and appreciated. Jerry married Jan, the love of his life, on Aug. 3, 1968 and together they spent the remainder of his tour in Twenty Nine Palms, California. In his free time he was a volunteer with the Twenty Nine Palms Fire Department as an engineer.

After being discharged from the military Jan and Jerry returned to their hometown of Foresthill, where they had their two sons, Mike and Matt. Jerry worked at the lumbermill and was a volunteer firefighter as well as a reserve deputy with the Placer County Sheriff's Department. After the lumbermill closed Jerry found his passion in corrections. With a nickname like "Bear" it's easy to see why he excelled. In 1995 Jerry along with his wife moved to Susanville, where he worked as a correctional officer at the California Correctional Center. He thoroughly enjoyed working the correction camp system. He retired in 2004.

Jerry enjoyed Harley Davidson motorcycles, always riding his bike with Jan in parades and on long trips. They both loved Hawaii and visited frequently. Jerry also loved shooting and collecting guns, he was an active member of the Patriot Guard Riders, Iron Warriors MC and a H.O.G. member. He was also very active with the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Marine Corps League of Susanville. As Bear's health declined his spirit and personality shone as bright as ever. Even from a wheelchair he was always the boss. Jerry will be remembered for his patriotism and honor in serving our country. He will be remembered as a wonderful family man, motorcycle enthusiast and car junkie. He will be deeply missed.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Alta Medley.

He is survived by his sister, Sandra Ford (Larry); his loving wife, Jan; his sons, Mike (Rachel) and Matt (Sarah); granddaughters, Andrea (Adam), Kayla, Bobbielynn and Lilly; and his great-grandsons, Dallas and Eric; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is planned for 2:00 p.m. July 11, 2015 at the Susan River Fire Dept Main Station on US 395. We love you and miss you!

Semper Fi, rest at ease Marine.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations may be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America, PO Box 38499, Sacramento, Calif. 95838.
