Charles J. "Charlie O" Ostrander, 82, North Syracuse, NY

Charles J. "Charlie O." Ostrander, 82, of North Syracuse, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011, following a long battle with Parkinson's disease. The strife is over, the battle done; The victory of life is won. Chief Ostrander served his community as a firefighter, with 39 years of service for the Syracuse Fire Department. Although Charlie O started as a smoke-eater in 1952 at 20s and worked with every fire house, his most frequently shared memories involved 6s. Mr. Squared Away first drove a 1929 Seagrave apparatus with no windshield, worked his way through the ranks and retired as deputy chief/training chief. Chief Ostrander was one of the first firefighters in Syracuse to receive the associate's degree in fire science at Onondaga Community College. He dedicated his life to serving and protecting our community, securing the safety of his fellow firefighters and saving lives. He loved his work. He served his country in the Marine Corps as corporal and sharpshooter in the 2nd Division 10th Regiment 16th Marines, where he was also a starting tackle for the 10th-16th Marines Camp LeJeune intramural league champion football team in 1949. He loved the Marines--always faithful. He was an avid sportsman, played baseball, football, basketball and tennis, and loved boating, barbecuing and his summer homes. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Elsie Wands Ostrander, on October 14, 2002; by his daughter, Kathleen, on January 11, 2011; and by his parents, Charles and Mabel Ostrander. Dad was devoted to his wife and family. He adored his kids, especially his grandchildren. He gave without needing to be asked, completely and willingly, yet never expected anything in return. His deep love and caring will be sorely missed. As Elsie said, There is a great belief, that on some distant shore, far from despair and grief, old friends shall meet once more. Surviving are his daughter, Karen A. (Ken); a brother, Philip; a sister, Shirley; three grandchildren, Ryseana (Shawn), Patrick (Jessica) and Kirstin (Nathan); nine great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, 435 South Main St., North Syracuse. Burial with military honors will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Fergerson Funeral Home, 215 South Main Street, North Syracuse. Donations may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation,, or 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, NY, NY 10018. Fergerson Funeral Home, Inc.
