App allows you to check uniform regs on your smartphone

Are my PT shorts too short? When can I wear my balaclava?

Now Marines can answer these and other pressing uniform questions with a glance at their mobile device, thanks to a new mobile app featuring a comprehensive guide to uniform regulations and proper use.

The Organizational Wear Guide app, created and released by Marine Corps Systems Command, is designed as an alternative to the thick, 11-chapter handbook Marine Corps Uniform Regulations, the often complex guide to uniform regs.

In a short promotional video featured on the official Marine Corps YouTube page, the app is also billed as a way to stay “two steps ahead of staff sergeant.”

In the promo spot, a staff noncommissioned officer is seen becoming progressively more anxious and stressed as he confronts multiple junior Marines on their uniform wear, only to have each Marine pull out his phone to show that he is in regs.

The spot closes with the frazzled SNCO pumping a stress toy with his head on his desk.

The app, which was released April 4 and is available for free on Android devices, features a photo and description of each uniform item, its features, and how it’s worn. It also has a quick-reference list featuring a green check mark and red “x” indicating whether the item is authorized in garrison and in the field.

It also features a “certification awareness” section in order to help troops identify items approved for official Marine Corps uniform use.

More than 500 Marines have installed the app so far, according to its stats page, and it has a user approval rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars.

According to the promo spot, the app will be available for iPhone users soon.
