LtCol Drew I. Matthews USMC (ret), 79, Lecanto, FL

Lt. Col. Drew I. Matthews, USMC, Ret., passed away on September 29, 2008, at Citrus Memorial hospital. Born on May 24, 1929, in Rockaway, NJ, he graduated from Morristown Prep, where he was the Junior and Senior Prefect, the No. 1 student in that year's class. After completion of high school in 1946, Drew enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was sent to Boot Camp at Parris Island. While at Boot Camp, Drew was recognized for his leadership potential and was selected to attend the university of his choice through the NROTC. Upon graduating from Dartmouth College with an Architectural degree, Drew served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps for 26 years, a career that saw tours of duty to Korea, Okinawa and Vietnam. Drew retired from the Corps in 1972 and moved his family to Naperville, IL, and held executive positions with the Lutheran Church of America, CAN/DO, a City of Naperville downtown redevelopment organization, and Wil-Freds Inc., a local general contractor and real estate developer. Drew retired once again, this time for good, and moved to Beverly Hills, FL, with his wife, Vivian, where together they enjoyed traveling. Drew is survived by his wife of 54 years; his three sons, Kevin of Warrenville, IL, Mark of Orlando, FL, and Terry of Tampa, FL; daughters-in-law Karen, Carol and Susan; and seven grandchildren, Kari (USMC), Kasey, Kevin Jr., Megan, Jordan, Sylvia, and Sara. Memorial services will be held at Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church in Citrus Springs, FL, on Saturday, October 4, 2008, at 11 am. Drew will be interred at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, at a date and time to be determined. Donations in lieu of flowers are requested to be made to American Heart Association or Hospice of Citrus County.
Brown Funeral Home and Crematory Lecanto, Florida.
