Kevin Francis Martha, 71, Eugene, OR

Kevin Francis Murtha, 71 years of age, passed away on 9/16/2016 at 8:20 AM, at the Green Valley Rehabilitation Health Center in Eugene, Oregon.

Kevin is survived by his brother Brian (sister-in-law Ellen Fitzgerald Murtha) of Santa Cruz, California, brother Michael of Arlington, Virginia, nephew Jordan Heath-Murtha of Santa Cruz, nieces Katherine (Udai Rohatgi) of San Francisco, and Kelly Lansford (Bryan) (and Kelly's mother and step-father Betsy and John Masters) of Steamboat Springs, CO, cousin Julie Alexander of Ontario, Canada, and numerous cousins of several degrees.

Kevin was preceded in death by his brother Terry, his mother and father, and his niece Brianna.

Kevin was born in New York City to Donald and Miriam (Taylor) Murtha; lived in Jackson Heights, Queens for a year, and the family then moved to Arlington, Virginia, when his father, employed by the U. S. Dept. of Labor, was wisely elevated to Assistant Solicitor, (about three steps down from the Secretary of Labor). Kevin grew up in Arlington, and attended local schools until 9th grade when he transferred to Windsor Mountain School in Lenox, MA. Kevin worked in the delivery-route business for several years after school, and then served in the U. S. Marine Corps from 1966 to 1970, stationed in Chu Lai as an avionics specialist. (Full circle: Kevin owned, at his death, a Kia automobile, manufactured in Chu Lai.)

Kevin returned to the delivery business after his military service, continuing that work for many years from residences in Maine, Santa Cruz, Olympia, WA, and on his land north of Medford, Oregon.

Kevin was diagnosed with a set of conditions that were determined to be service-connected, and declared 100% disabled in the early years of this century, after which he moved to Eugene, Oregon, finding himself no longer able to perform the physical chores of living on his beloved land. With good fortune, Kevin eventually landed at the Woodland Creek Apartments with his dog, Danny -- as Kevin's health deteriorated and it became difficult for him to walk Danny, other residents of the apartments walked Danny for him, and the administrative staff of the apartments made periodic safety checks on Kevin.

Kevin had a long relationship with Unity Church, in Santa Cruz, CA, Olympia, WA, and Medford and Eugene, OR, especially participating for many years in the annual Big Sky Retreats in Montana. ("We are discoverers and creators of meaningful spiritual values on a journey of the Self, expanding our vision and consciousness as spiritual beings. We provide an atmosphere of healing.") It was always about the hugs!

Kevin had a fall in October, 2015; after a brief hospitalization he was transferred to the Green Valley Rehabilitation Health Center in Eugene and never regained sufficient independence to live on his own again. His decline from that time on was gradual but sure. Family and friends who visited Kevin at Green Valley were impressed by the professionalism and conscientiousness of the staff, and indeed, their sincere affection for Kevin, (for instance, one employee, Sherry, came to visit Kevin on her day off!)

Kevin arranged for his ashes to be scattered at sea. Please think of Kevin and give somebody a hug.
