Ray Howard Church, 92, Ogden, UT (POW)

Ogden, UT- Our hero, Ray Howard Church, 92, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013 following a brief case of pneumonia surrounded by his family at George Wahlen Veteran's Home in Ogden. Born March 15, 1920 in Henrieville, Utah to George N. and Sarah Jane Shakespeare Church. One of 12 children, Ray's family moved to Delta, UT when he was 3, where he attended school and was involved in athletics. Ray attended Dixie College and joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1940. He was stationed on the island of Guam when Pearl Harbor was attacked, Dec. 7, 1941. Three days later, Guam fell to Japanese forces and Ray was taken prisoner. He spent 45 months as a P.O.W. in Japan. After several months of rehabilitation in San Diego, Ray returned home a decorated and honored hero. Upon his return to Delta, he met and married Marion Moody on July 26, 1946 in the Manti LDS Temple. Their love and their life together was a light and example to all who knew them. Ray and Marion moved to California in 1953, he spent the next 40 years in the banking industry. Ray was also extremely involved in community and civic organizations, served as President of Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs, President of Chamber of Commerce, President of Associated Chamber of Commerce for San Fernando Valley, Chairman of Draft Board during Vietnam War and served on many advisory boards for city of Los Angeles.

Ray and Marion moved to Ogden in February 1991. Always strong and active in LDS church, Ray has served in three bishoprics, three high councils, as High Priest Group Leader and as a Stake Missionary. He and Marion served full time temple mission in Chicago, Illinois. They shared nine years as temple ordinance workers in Ogden Temple, and three year service mission as hosts at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.

Ray loved to read, play golf, play Rook and just PLAY, but his greatest joy was in spending time with his family. Survived by loving wife Marion, who faithfully served him to the end, their three children: Susan (Robert) Daum of Wilmington, DE and Ogden; Carolyn (James E.) Smith of Farmington; Michael Ray (Linda) Church of Ogden; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; brother: Ned Church; sisters: Margaret Callister, Sarah Finlinson. Preceded in death by parents, son-in law: Brian C. Davis, and one great-grandchild.

Special thanks to staff of the George Wahlen Veterans Home, especially those in D-Wing; and Hospice, for their exceptional and personal care. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to General Missionary Fund of LDS Church.

Funeral: 11 AM, Monday, Jan. 21, 2013 at Washington Terrace LDS Chapel, 4855 S 300 W, Washington Terrace, UT. Viewing: preceding service, 9-10:40 AM. Additional viewing: Tuesday, Jan. 22, 10 AM, Nickle Mortuary, Delta, 190 S Center St. Burial Delta Cemetery.
