When you walked at the head of your people, O God, and lived with them on their journey, the earth shook at your presence, and the skies poured forth their rain, alleluia! (Ps. 67)

Lord Jesus, you assured your disciples that even though you had to leave them you would always be with them.
Help us to feel your presence in our lives and reassure us that you are always with us, as we walk this journey of faith on earth.
Amen.

“It was not you who chose me but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain so that whatever you ask the Father in my name He will give you.” John 15:16

Heavenly Father, sometimes I forget that all things begin with your grace, continue with your providence and are brought to completion in the day of Christ Jesus your Son.
Many people ask me if I have accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior, if I have been saved. I say, “No” on two counts.
First, it was not I who chose Jesus but He who chose me to go and bear fruit that will last.
Second, He is not my personal divinity but the Savior who died for all.

Lord help me to remember always that you begin by calling each of us to faith and by your grace give us all we need to accomplish the tasks of this day and life for your greater glory and our own salvation.
We pray through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

God mounts his throne to shouts of joy; a blare of trumpets for the Lord. (Ps 47)

Father in heaven, our minds were prepared for the coming of your kingdom when you took Christ beyond our sight so that we might seek him in his glory.
May we follow where he has led and find our hope in his glory, for he is Lord for ever.
Amen.

When God Made Mothers

When the Good Lord was creating Mothers
He was into the sixth day of "overtime" when the angel appeared and
said, "You are doing a lot of fiddling around with this one."
And the Lord said "Have you read the spec on this order?"

She has to be completely washable, but not plastic.
She must have 180 moveable parts...all replaceable,
Run on black coffee and leftovers.
She needs to have a lap that disappears when she stands up,
A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a disappointed love
affair... and six pairs of hands...

The angel shook her head slowly and said,
"Six pairs of hands...No Way."
"It's not the hands that are causing me problems," said the Lord.
"It's the three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have."

"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.
The Lord Nodded.
"One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks,
'What are you kids doing in there?" even though she already knows.
Another here in the back of her head that sees
what she shouldn't but what she has to know,
and of course the ones here in the front that can look
at a child when he goofs up and say,
"I understand and I love you"
without so much as uttering a word.

"Lord," said the angel touching his sleeve gently,
"come to bed. Tomorrow..."

"I can't," said the Lord,
"I'm so close to creating something so close to myself.
Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick...
can feed a family of six with one pound of hamburger...
and can get a nine year old to stand under a shower."

The angel circled the model of a Mother very slowly.
"It's too soft," she sighed.

"But tough!" said the Lord excitedly.
"You cannot imagine what this Mother can do or endure."

"Can it think?"

"Not only can it think, but it can reason and compromise,"
said the Creator.
Finally, the angel bent over and ran a finger across the cheek.
"There is a leak," she pronounced.
"I told you, you were trying to put too much into this model."

"Its not a leak," said the Lord "its a tear."

"What's it for?"

"It's for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness and pride."

"You are a genius," said the angel.

The Lord looked somber.
"I didn't put it there......"

“I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.” John 15:15

Almighty and infinite God, Jesus, your son, is the model of perfect manhood.
He teaches us the way to true purpose and fulfillment in this life through two demanding tasks for which He also gives us the grace.
First He is completely transparent and reveals all that the Father gives him.
Second, he lays down his life for those he loves, which includes even his enemies.

If I can share myself in appropriate self-disclosure and commit myself to what is true, beautiful and good, then I am His friend and follower.
Father, give me the courage to be transparent with my close friends and to be faithful to all my commitments, I pray through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

“But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go I will send Him to you.” John 16:7

Heavenly Father, God of all the living, the older we get the more we miss the good and comfortable friends who have died and returned to the earth from which they came.
Our faith gives us every reason to hope they are with you in eternity.
Only you know the full story.
Help me not to cling to the ones who have gone before and are with you but to warmly embrace the gift of the persons you have placed and are placing in my life right now.

Your Holy Spirit, who is the fire of love and Father of the poor, fills us all with abundant gifts to share with the people in our lives.
For this we never cease to wonder and thank you.
In particular, I thank you, Lord God, for your nearness to my heart and life this day, through that same Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Let us come to God's presence with confidence, because we will find mercy, and strength when we need it, alleluia. (Heb 4)

God our Father, we believe in your presence in our lives and we come before you seeking your guidance and help in the issues and challenges that face us today.
May you give us the strength we need to live the events and experiences in our lives with trust, confidence and hope.
Amen.

Prayer for the Armed Forces

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad.
Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace, strengthen them in their trials and temptations, give them courage to face the perils which beset them,
and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

“Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you." John 16:23

Come Holy Ghost, Creator Blest,
And in our hearts take up thy rest;
Come with thy grace and heavenly aid
To fill the hearts which Thou hast made,
To fill the hearts which Thou hast made.

O comforter, to thee we cry,
The heav’nly gift of God most high:
O font of life and fire of love,
And sweet anointing from above,
And sweet anointing from above.
Amen.

The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord. (Ps 33)

God our Father, by this Easter mystery you touch our lives with the healing power of your love.
You have given us the freedom of the children of God.
We pray that we will always know of your love for us as your children.
Amen.

“Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed ,saying: ‘Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one.’” John 17: 11

Good Father of all, help us this day to embrace the gift of unity in the Body of Christ and know that the Church has been called to be one just as Christ and You, the Father, are one.
Help us, Lord, to find ways, according to your gracious will, to bring unity among all Christians.

Surely, if we cease resisting the power of the Spirit, the Truth will unite us around Christ your Son and bring the Gospel to every creature in the world.
With you, Lord, all things are possible.
May we all be one as you and the Son are perfectly one.
Amen.

"I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do. Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had with you before the world began." (JN 17:4-5)

Glorious Father, we thank you for your work which You have given us to do in your name.
We ask that every day we see your will in the work that we do.
Help us to see the the glory of God in everyone we meet today and in all that we do.

"They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is the truth." (JN 17:16-17)

My dear Jesus, today you tell us that we are not of this world but belong to you.
Thank you for the gift of life that you so freely give to us. You bless us in the truth of your holy Word.
Help us to spend time every day with your word and bring our attention to that truth and holy presence.
Amen.

Let Us Know Peace

Let us know peace.
For as long as the moon shall rise,
For as long as the rivers shall flow,
For as long as the sun will shine,
For as long as the grass shall grow,
Let us know peace.
Amen.

Prayer for Firefighters

Merciful Father in heaven, look down in Your love upon all those who protect us and ours from the ravages of fire and flame.
Grant them the courage and skills to carry out their duties well and safely.
When they must go into the face of danger, be by their side in the smoke and flames.
Watch over their families, ever reminding them that those who fight fire are also in Your loving care.
This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.
Amen.

Jesus, Be Our Companion

Lord Jesus, stay with us, for evening is at hand and the day is past;
be our companion in the way, kindle our hearts, and awaken hope,
that we may know you as you are revealed in Scripture and the breaking of bread.
Grant this for the sake of your love.
Amen.

A Memorial Day Prayer

Eternal God,
Creator of years, of centuries,
Lord of whatever is beyond time,
Maker of all species and master of all history --
How shall we speak to you
from our smallness and inconsequence?
Except that you have called us to worship you
in spirit and in truth;
You have dignified us with loves and loyalties;
You have lifted us up with your lovingkindnesses.
Therefore we are bold to come before you without groveling
[though we sometimes feel that low]
and without fear
[though we are often anxious].
We sing with spirit and pray with courage
because you have dignified us;
You have redeemed us from the aimlessness
of things' going meaninglessly well.
God, lift the hearts of those
for whom this holiday is not just diversion,
but painful memory and continued deprivation.
Bless those whose dear ones have died
needlessly, wastefully [as it seems]
in accident or misadventure.
We remember with compassion those who have died
serving their countries
in the futility of combat.
There is none of us but must come to bereavement and separation,
when all the answers we are offered
fail the question death asks of each of us.
We believe that you will provide for us
as others have been provided with the fulfillment of
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."

"But Many that are first will be last, and the last will be first." (MK 10:31)

Heavenly Father, thank you for teaching us how to be first in heaven.
If we put others first in this short life on earth we will have everlasting life at Your side.
This grace is given to us freely from your love, we do nothing to earn it.
Help us to spread each day the good news of your gift of eternal life.
Help us to bring many souls home to Your eternal love.
Amen.

"Rather whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many". (MK 10:45)

Dear Lord, help us rush to the end of the line of earthly rewards so that we may be first in line for eternal life.
We ask that you give us the strength to always put our brothers and sisters needs before our own demonstrating our great love for you.
In our service to others open the floodgates of Your love to fill our hearts with triumphant joy as we wait in watchful hope for the day when we can see Your face.
Amen.

Firefighter's Prayer

When I am called to duty, God,
wherever flames may rage,
give me strength to save a life,
whatever be its age.
Help me embrace a little child
before it is too late,
or save an older person from
the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert,
and hear the weakest shout,
quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling,
to give the best in me,
to guard my friend and neighbor,
and protect his property.
And if according to Your will
I must answer death's call,
bless with your protecting hand,
my family one and all.

I will not leave you orphans, says the Lord.
I will come back to you, and your hearts will rejoice. (Jn 14)

Lord Jesus, in the scriptures we hear that you will not leave us orphans and that you will come back and our hearts will rejoice.
By your gift of grace, may we feel the warmth of your Spirit in our lives, so that we can truly know that you will not leave us orphans.
Amen.

The Lord fed his people with the finest wheat and honey; their hunger was satisfied. (Ps 80)

Lord Jesus Christ, we worship you living among us in the sacrament of your body and blood.
May we offer to our Father in heaven a solemn pledge of undivided love.
May we offer to our brothers and sisters a life poured out in loving service of that kingdom where you live with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

A Heart to Love Thee

O Lord, who hast mercy upon all, take away from me my sins,
and mercifully kindle in me the fire of thy Holy Spirit.
Take away from me the heart of stone,
and give me a heart of flesh,
a heart to love and adore thee,
a heart to delight in thee,
to follow and to enjoy thee,
for Christ's sake.

Ambrose of Milan (c. 339-97)

Lord, hear my voice when I call to you. You are my help; do not cast me off, do not desert me, my Savior God. (Ps 26)

Lord Jesus, we come before you confident that you hear our voices and will respond to our cry for help.
We realize that without you we are in great danger of falling into unhealthy situations in our lives that will pull us away from you.
We ask for the grace to grow in our trust, confidence and belief in your unconditional love for us in our lives.
Amen.
