Maj George L. Haggerty USMC (ret), 91, Newport News, VA

NEWPORT NEWS - George L. Haggerty, Major, USMC (ret.), age 91, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011.

George was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Nov. 16, 1920, as the only child of the late George and Marie Dunham Haggerty. He was raised in Garden City, Long Island, and graduated from Garden City High School in 1938. He attended Hofstra University and the Citadel for two years before he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, in 1942, during WWII. He was selected for Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Va., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in June 1943. He served as a rifle platoon leader and commander during the battles of Peleliu and Okinawa and was awarded two purple hearts. George became career military and served in staff and command positions in Newfoundland (Canada), West Virginia, North Carolina, Virginia, Kansas, California, Japan and Taiwan. He then retired after 21 years of service in 1963.

Following retirement, he attended Old Dominion University and graduated in 1966 with a B.A. degree in history and business, while working in real estate sales during his studies. In 1968, he earned a Bachelors of Laws degree from the Blackstone School of Law. He became Assistant Director of Administration of Old Dominion University, from 1966 to 1972, and then went on to be President of Norfolk College in Norfolk, Va. He retired as President Emeritus in 1979.

George was preceded in death by Katherine (Kay) Haggerty, his beloved wife of 53 years.

He is survived by Mary Lou Calhoun, his devoted second wife of 11 years; his four children, Michael Mathers and wife, Sandra of Chapel Hill, N.C., William Mathers and wife, Elizabeth of Virginia Beach, Kathy Miskimon and husband, Wallace of Birmingham, Ala., and Patrick Haggerty and wife, Susan of Newport News; as well as Mary Lou's two children, Joyce Bailey of Gladstone, Va., and Robin Mouring and husband, David of Newport News. He also felt blessed to have many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Over his lifetime, George had an inherent love of animals and was a devoted owner of numerous canine pets. After military service he became a man of acceptance and peace. He knew the value of all men and women and "never knew a stranger."

The family would like to express special thanks for the care and concern shown by the staff of Riverside Hospice.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Peninsula Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Peninsula SPCA, 523 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601; or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 5712 Cleveland Street, Ste. 100, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at
