Josť Lopes Gomes, 86, of Danbury, CT

Josť Lopes Gomes, 86, of Danbury, passed into eternal rest after a brief illness to be reunited with his loving wife Adela (Garcia) Gomes on Christmas Day, Monday, December 25th, 2017.

"Joe" was surrounded and supported by Regional Hospice & Palliative Care of Western CT and his children, Joni Gomes Langhorn and son-in-law Harry, son Joel, and daughter JoAnn Gomes Buehler and her family in Texas during the last days of his life.

He was the son of the late Josť Gomes Batista and Alzira Lopes Gomes.

Josť Gomes was born in Juncais, province of Fornos de Algodres, Portugal on January 14, 1931. He immigrated to the United States in 1948 where he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He trained in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and served as a Tractor Operator in the H and S Company 3rd Division Amphibian Tractor Battalion FMF Pacific at Camp Pendleton, California in 1953. He was honorably discharged in July 1954. After serving in the Marines, he went to work at Rebello's Tailor Shop in Danbury and then worked for Castro Convertibles Corp. for many years as a furniture upholsterer. He also worked as a barber in trade. After the Castro company moved to Florida, he worked as Maintenance Manager for D.M. Read Store in Danbury before retiring.

Josť enjoyed fishing in his free time and was a member of the Simsbury Fish and Game Club.
Josť was an active member of the Portuguese American Club and later the Portuguese Cultural Center in Danbury and a dedicated and devoted member of the Marine Corps League, Hat City Detachment. He was very proud to march every year in the Memorial Day Parade., Danbury.

Josť is survived by 2 daughters, JoAnn Gomes Buehler and husband Tony of Houston, Texas; Joni Gomes Langhorn and husband Harry of Manorville, Long Island; a son, Joel Gomes of Danbury and by two loving granddaughters, Amanda and Janine Buehler.

The family will receive friends in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Avenue, Danbury on Friday, December 29, 2017 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Interment services will take place on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.

Contributions in Mr. Gomes memory may be made to Regional Hospice & Palliative Care of Western CT, 30 Milestone Rd., Danbury, CT 06810.
