Harry John Steindorf, 64, Cottage Grove, WI

Harry John Steindorf, Captain USMC, age 64, of Cottage Grove, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011, in Arizona due to complications from diabetes.

He was born on Feb. 20, 1946, in Black River Falls, the son of Harry A. and Lavina (Davis) Steindorf. He married Suzan K. (Mitchell) on March 29, 1968, in Dillon, S.C.

Harry graduated from UW-Whitewater and attended law school at UW-Madison. He served as an administrator for the Ho-Chunk Nation and retired from UW-Madison after 23 years. Harry was proud to serve as a Captain in the USMC for six years. He flew A-6A Intruder Jets in Vietnam from '69 - '70 with the Vikings, VMA (AW) 225, flying 326 combat missions. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for Combat Valor. Harry served as past president for VFW Post 7591 and a member of the American Legion.

Harry loved spending time flying with his son, Jess, also a pilot. Harry lived his life with his best friend, companion, and wife, Suzan, at his side. They enjoyed their time on the golf course and traveling the U.S. in their RV.

Harry is survived by his true love, his wife, Suzan, their son Jess, Jess' wife Alicia, and Jess' son Mitchell. He is also survived by his sisters, Elethe and Polly; his brothers, Francis, Terry and John, their spouses; and countless nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his brother, Bill; and sisters, Jan and Jenny.

Join family and friends in a celebration of Harry's life on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at 5:30 p.m. at DOOR CREEK GOLF COURSE, Cottage Grove.

Donations in Harry's memory can be made to American Diabetes Association or Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund.
