John D. Gribbin Sr.

John D. Gribbin Sr., 80, died Friday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

Born in Trenton, he was a lifelong area resident.

He was a baseball player and track standout at Junior High School #3 and left high school to join the U.S. Marine Corps. He served four years in the 2nd Marine Division in various locations in the Pacific and that experience was a major influence throughout his life. He was active for many years in the Marine Corps League's Schiller Avenue detachment, serving as commandant in the 1960's...and whenever asked about himself, he would always reply..."I'm a Marine first".

Upon returning from World War II, Mr. Gribbin went to work with his father and brother in the family marble and granite business in Trenton. He and his late brother George, also a Marine veteran, ran E.A. Gribbin & Sons after their father's death in 1958, providing intricate stone work for many of Trenton and Princeton's buildings of that era. After leaving the stone business, Mr. Gribbin spent nearly 30 years working for Griffith Electric Supply of Trenton, retiring as the operations manager in 1997. He served as the shop steward of the IBEW.

He married Mary Theresa Ridge, of Balboa, Panama Canal Zone on February 6, 1954 in the Sacred Heart Church in Trenton. The couple lived in Princeton, Trenton and later in Hamilton, raising seven sons and one daughter along the way. Mary Gribbin, the light of his life and devoted wife of 44 years, died in 1998. Mr. Gribbin coached little league baseball for 17 years in the Hamilton Township Recreation Association. He was also past president of the Holy Name Society at Holy Angels Church. In recent years he was a member of the Hamilton Elks Lodge #2262.

Son of the late Edward and Ethlyn Gribbin, brother of the late George Gribbin, he is survived by his seven sons, Edward and wife Georgianne Gribbin of Merion, PA, John and wife Renate Gribbin of Columbus, Daniel and wife Judy Gribbin of Hamilton, Patrick, Michael and Peter Gribbin of Hamilton, Thomas and wife Lauren of Titusville; his daughter, Maryann Gribbin of Somerset; 13 grandchildren, Kristin, John, Daniel, Vincent, Brian, Shawn, Patrick, Michael, Kyle, Vanessa, Cameron, Taylor and Bridget; brothers and sisters-in-law, Vincent and Dottie Ridge of Center Valley, PA, Joan Marie DeGrummond of Luguna Beach, Ca, Margaret Coffee of Chalmette, LO, Winnie Ridge of Hamilton Square, Joseph and Sue Ridge of Burlington, IA, Julia Ridge of Corpus Christi, TX and Josephine Ridge of St. Augustine, FL; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 7:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Kingston and Kemp Funeral Home, 260 White Horse Ave., Hamilton.

Funeral Mass will be held 9 a.m. at the Holy Angels Church, 1733 S. Broad St., Hamilton.

Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Angels Church Restoration Fund, 1733 S. Broad St., Hamilton, NJ 08610.
